Welcome to the “Rural Connections”
Broadband Information Site for the Townships of
McNab/Braeside and Admaston/Bromley

This site is designed to provide information to the public on the high speed Internet service expansion currently underway in the townships of McNab/Braeside and Admaston/Bromley.

Project Objective: The purpose of this project is to bring High Speed Internet Service to more residents and businesses in the two townships.

Parties Involved: This “Rural Connections” project is a joint venture between the Province of Ontario, the Townships of McNab/Braeside & Admaston/Bromley and Bell Aliant. The Township of McNab/Braeside has been designated as the lead municipality for this enterprise.

History: In late 2008, with the assistance of a coordinator appointed by the County of Renfrew, a group of four (4) townships began to prepare an application for funding by the Province’s “Rural Connections” program. Those initially involved included: McNab/Braeside; Admaston/Bromley; Horton; and Greater Madawaska. It soon became apparent that no vendor was prepared to provide high speed Internet service across all of the territory the Townships’ wanted to cover.

Following an open and competitive “Request for Proposal” (RFP) process, Bell Aliant Regional Communication Limited was confirmed as the successful vendor. Bell’s proposal included the installation of high speed DSL Internet service in six areas: Russett Drive; Sand Point; Braeside; White Lake and Burnstown in McNab/Braeside; and Douglas in Admaston/Bromley. In February, 2009, Bell’s proposal was incorporated into the Townships’ official application to the Province.

Funding: On June 19, 2009, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) approved the townships’ proposal for a project valued at $987,318.00. The announcement indicated that the Province would be providing $329,106 as its one-third contribution to the “Rural Connections” Broadband expansion program in the Townships of McNab/Braeside and Admaston /Bromley.

Technology and Time-Line: This project involves the installation of DSL high speed “nodes” in the six key locations mentioned above and the provision of high speed wire-line Internet service in the adjoining areas. The installations at Russett Drive, Sand Point and Braeside were scheduled for 2009, with White Lake, Douglas and Burnstown following in 2010.
